Amazon Go is an 1,800-square-foot convenience store built at the street entrance of the company's first-day high-rise headquarters. It uses deep learning algorithms and computer vision-powered cameras to let people grab what they want and get out there.

 


Amazon Go stores have been open to Amazon employees for a year. Open to the public on January 22.

Seattle's new Amazon Go store uses what the company calls "Just Walk Out" technology.

The biggest feature of Amazon Go is that there is no cashier. When you arrive, you scan the Amazon Go app on your phone to register your presence and enter the store. After that, everything you pick up is automatically tracked by the store's cameras, and your Amazon account is charged when you step out. All without a check-in with a store clerk or actual payment.

 

When you log into the Amazon Go app with your Amazon account, you're presented with a QR code that you scan at the turnstiles to enter the store. CNET's Amazon virtual appliance is called "Mike."

The Amazon Prime store was filled with Amazon workers in its final days before it opened to the public.

 

When you walk into an Amazon store, the first thing you see are ready meals. Pasta salads, lettuce salads, wraps, and sandwiches line tall shelves, making it easy for people to rush in, grab food, and run back.

 

Amazon employees restock items in bright orange shirts, making sure the store is never a popular choice. Amazon has said that the same number of people will use it on Amazon Go as would be found in a similarly sized convenience store. Amazon has more people stocking shelves and cooking meals than cashiers.

 

When you walk into an Amazon store, if you don't have time to go to a full grocery store, you'll see general baking supplies and other things to take home.

 

Amazon sells dinnerware in its Amazon Go store. These come with all the necessary ingredients to cook for two people.

 

The only time you have to interact with an actual person in Amazon's store is if you want to buy alcohol. Amazon will have an employee in the department at all times to check your ID. After that, you're free to grab anything from that section just like you would from the rest of the store.

 

The Amazon Go app has different sections like "Discover" to show what's in stock for the day.

You receive your shopping receipt in the Amazon Go app, showing exactly what you bought and how much it cost.

 

Amazon's Just Walk Out technology lets you shop without interacting with a cashier.

 

Amazon is selling Amazon-branded items, including water bottles, in the new store.

 

Amazon Go in Seattle will be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

 

Gianna Puerini, Amazon's vice president of Go, said the company's "plan from the beginning was ... we can do something so you can walk in, grab whatever you want, and leave.

 

Amazon Go has been open to Amazon employees for the past year. During CNET's lunchtime visit, the store was bustling with employees flowing in and out.

 

Amazon Go opens the door to the prospect that you may never have to wait in a checkout line again. Stores may also help kill self-checkout machines.

 

Amazon makes disputes easy. You swipe left on an expense listed on a receipt in the Amazon Go app to delete it.

 

To remove a charge from your account in the Amazon Go app, you have to explain why – such as the quality wasn't as expected, or you didn't receive the item.

 

The Amazon Go store sits on a corner of the company's Seattle headquarters.
