Welcome to the mobile age of chatbots. Bing AI is already there, and now OpenAI has launched the first mobile version of its popular ChatGPT, on iOS (here's how to download ChatGPT on iPhone).
Just days after CEO Sam Altman outlined in front of Congress the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence, Open announced and delivered another extension to its AI-generated platform — a large language model service — that brings it to the best iPhones.
As a free and official version of N.Chat, a chat chatbot, this is built on GPT-3. However, you can access ChatGPT+ and those GPT-4-powered services by logging into your account or through an app upgrade (which means more up-to-date training and potentially better accuracy).
This is a limited rollout as it's us only, no Android version. OpenAI does promise in its blog post, "Android users, you're next! ChatGPT will be on your device soon."
ChatGPT on Ios is similar to the web-based desktop version. Upon installation, it alerts you that "ChatGPT is inaccurate." Still, it's a very stripped-down interface, and certainly leaner than what you'll find on Microsoft Mobile. Ice moxa.
A new chat screen will open to a white screen with a black (sometimes blue) dot in the middle. Below that is the prompt window where you can type your query. I asked about a business plan and we wanted to build a new ice cream parlor on the beach in San Diego. Responses are almost instantaneous and very detailed.

New in this mobile version, though, is the ability to add voice queries. On the right side of the prompt window is a small recording icon. Once you've selected it, the area below the text cue shows that it's recording. You have to click stop. However, after several attempts, the open-source speech recognition system powered by Whisper failed to capture my query and instead displayed an API error.
It turns out that while ChatGPT was listening, when we selected "Retry Transcription," it did interpret our query and throw it into the prompt window. On the fifth attempt, it finally captured the query and put the recognized text into the hint field. I still had to hit the "up arrow" to get in and pass the prompt to ChatGPT.
We suspect that OpenAI has already solved the above problems by the time you read this article.
Since your ChatGPT history is synced across devices, you can open your history in the app and, like me, see the tips I added today on the mobile app and the four
You can even go back and continue any of these conversations. I jumped to a post from February on whether ChatGPT will remain free forever, noting that it's not always free these days. It basically said, "Hey man, I can't control this, talk to the bosses at OpenAI." Well, not in those words, but that's the gist of it.
There aren't many controls other than starting a new chat, logging out, and deleting your account – just in case you're really scared of AI.
Even though ChatGPT is now on your iPhone, it's not Siri's. For example, it can't set a timer on your phone (although it can give you Siri brain surgery with ChatGPT). On the other hand, neither Siri nor ChatGPT can directly control the brightness of my iPhone.
Guess they all have some way to go before they are the ultimate mobile, voice AI.
The ChatGPT app is now available for download in the App Store. Look for "OpenAI ChatGPT" if you want the real one, not one of the countless, free, knockoffs.
