Meta announced the development of a new chip specifically designed to run AI models. The company is best known for its range of apps, including facebook, Whatsapp and instagram - and, of course, it's trying to get the Metaverse off the ground - but has recently started investing heavily in AI.

Santosh Janardhan, Vice President and Head of Infrastructure at Meta, shared on Recent Blog Posts The company said interest in AI has grown significantly, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying the company "sees an opportunity to introduce billions of people to AI agents that will be useful and meaningful."

The chips and other infrastructure plans revealed in the post will be a key tool in Meta's ability to compete with other tech giants such as Google and Microsoft, which have already invested heavily in AI in the form of Google Bard and Bing's ChatGPT interface.

Meta's new MTIA chip (Meta Training And Inference Accelerator) is a "chup family of internal custom accelerators for inference workloads." The chip will provide greater computing power and efficiency, which is tailored to Meta's workload. As such, MTIA chips paired with Gpus will allow Meta to "deliver better performance, lower latency, and higher efficiency" for each workload.

What does it matter? Well, given the increasing demand for AI computing power, the MTIA chip could give Meta a huge boost. Since it is manufactured "in-house", it will be designed to perfectly match the workload and needs of the meta and will free the company from being dependent on other companies. According to MTIA chips are still a long way off technological innovation , reports that we won't see the chip until at least 2025.

Too little too late?

We've seen what kind of ordeal a company has to go through when it's a little late in the AI game (looking at you, Google), so not seeing a chip for at least two years does make me wonder if Meta has a growing number in the ai population status of the field.

That being said, there's no doubt we'll see AI sneak into Meta at some point in one way or another. Given the types of products Meta owns, like Whatsapp and Instagram, it will be interesting to see how it implements AI into these social media apps. Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading"), Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading"), Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading"), Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading"), Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading") "Burn", Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading"), Snapchat (meaning "burn after reading").

I'm relieved to see the company go in any direction that isn't a metropolis, so while I'm a little impatient to see what it might do to AI, I'm glad it's working on what people really want. The company is designing itself The belief in its product is commendable and could really help it stand out from many other AI initiatives.
