Tencent New Campus - A Green Smart City
Tencent's new park is located in Qianhaiwan, Shenzhen, covering an area of 133 hectares. The design requires the park to form a small city, including main functions such as office buildings, employee dormitories, commercial complexes, public infrastructure, schools and conference centers. The design requires that the new park building covers an area of 2 million square meters and can accommodate 80,000-100,000 people in office space and 19,000 people in employee housing.
The new park will be built into a smart city demonstration area to demonstrate the huge potential of the latest urban construction technologies in improving the urban environment.
MVRDV’s work presents a comprehensive consideration of the entire park construction process. The design team used the concept of a smart city to integrate all elements in the park, simulating its shape as rolling mountains, and setting up a seaside park along the site.

The crossroads in the center of the office area is the “beating heart” of the park, the Information Plaza. This spherical space starts from four adjacent buildings on the corner and displays a series of data related to daily operations of Tencent Park, from occupancy rate to carbon usage. Another "smart city" measure concerns the traffic strategy within the campus: along the east side of the site, a highway connects four underground car parks. The park maintains a road system for autonomous vehicles and shuttle buses to ensure easy access for employees and residents. In addition, there are urban subway and bus lines on the east and west sides of Tencent Park, connecting the park to other parts of Shenzhen.

From occupancy rate to carbon emissions, this circular space shows people various relevant data on the daily operations of Tencent Park. Another focus of the "smart city" intervention is the transportation strategy of the park: to the east of the park, the highway can directly access four underground parking lots, while the above-ground transportation network is reserved for driverless cars and circulating shuttles to ensure the travel of employees and residents. convenience. In addition, subway and bus lines to the city center run along the east and west sides of the site, connecting the Tencent campus with the rest of Shenzhen.
“We are trying to show the public that smart cities can also become green cities,” said Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV. “Represented by the futuristic data center in the center of the park, the entire park is covered with ubiquitous smart city elements. Tencent employees among them will be surrounded by a sense of technology. But at the same time, the winding park in the park is just a few steps away, and green spaces are everywhere, so that they can feel the nature around them at any time."
