Cupertino, California, may already be making a name for itself as Apple's headquarters. But on October 29, the city's residents will have even more to boast about. Residents will be able to hail shared shuttles through the mobile app Via (iOS and Android), which will provide active connectivity to CalTrain and will expand to connections throughout the city.

Cupertino officials hope that by building more convenient public transportation services, residents will be encouraged to travel less, thereby reducing traffic congestion and emissions.

Commuters in the 11-square-mile city will no longer have to rely on existing bus routes and schedules, as Cupertino's new partnership with Via allows passengers to pool rides when they need them, thanks to Satellite area coverage around the Sunnyvale train station.

"Partnering with Via will enable a new generation of public transportation that will allow us to improve mobility while reducing congestion in Cupertino," said Mayor Stephen Schaff.

Via fares are $5 per trip, weekly and monthly passes are $17 per week and $60 per month. Service hours are 6:00 am to 8:00 pm, Monday to Friday, and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday.

Also, in a partnership with Avis Budget Group, ride-hailing services will initially be set up with six seats. The Cupertino-branded Mercedes van will carry six passengers in addition to a driver. Over time, the number of vehicles will increase to 10. Avis Budget Group will provide fleet management services, including vehicle maintenance, to ensure an on-demand public transport solution for Cupertino commuters.

Via will also assist in the redesign of cities and transportation systems around the world, providing residents with a choice of strict routes and timetables to suit network needs.

Via's technology is also being used in other California cities, including Los Angeles, Pacifica, Marin, West Sacramento, and throughout Orange County (made up of cities south of Los Angeles County).

Launched in Manhattan in September 2013, the Via platform operates in the U.S. and Europe with a Mercedes-Benz joint venture called ViaVan. The technology is also being used in dozens of partnerships between public transport agencies, private transport operators, taxi companies, private companies and universities.
